Thank you Debra, Valerie, and the entire BET family for hosting me tonight at Leading Women Defined. It was an absolute joy to be with such brilliant, bold, inspiring women. Debra, you’re a friend, a mentor, and a role model for so many, including me, and I’m excited to continue this conversation with you and all of the leading women from tonight’s event. #LWDBET
Writing BECOMING has been a deeply personal experience. It has allowed me, for the very first time, the space to honestly reflect on the unexpected trajectory of my life. In this book, I talk about my roots and how a little girl from the South Side of Chicago found her voice and developed the strength to use it to empower others. I hope my journey inspires readers to find the courage to become whoever they aspire to be. I can't wait to share my story. Please visit the website in my bio for more information.
As a young girl, even in my wildest dreams, I never could have imagined this moment. Nobody in my family has ever had a portrait - there are no portraits of the Robinsons or the Shields from the South Side of Chicago. This is all a little bit overwhelming, especially when I think about all of the young people who will visit the National Portrait Gallery and see this, including so many young girls and young girls of color who don’t often see their images displayed in beautiful and iconic ways. I am so proud to help make that kind of history. But the fact is that none of this would be possible without the extraordinary artist and woman behind this portrait, @asherald. Thank you, Amy – it was a joy to work with you and get to know you.
On the South Side of Chicago where I grew up, people like Kamau are working hard to make sure all of our young people can fulfill their dreams. Stories like this remind us that it's possible to create positive change in your community by sharing the things you love and supporting one another. School counselors have the power to teach our kids what it means to go high when others go low. Congratulations to our 2018 School Counselor of the Year Kirsten Perry and all of the finalists! #SCOY18
Ellen, you make 60 look so good! Congratulations on yet another milestone. You make us all laugh so much, but you also warm our hearts. Thanks to you, the world is a more loving, welcoming, and joyous place for all of our children. And for that, @BarackObama and I couldn’t be prouder to call you our friend.
It’s because of school counselors like Kirsten Perry that our young people dream a little bigger, and reach a little higher. Kirsten, I can’t wait to honor you and your colleagues from across the country at the School Counselor of the Year Ceremony next week. #ReachHigher
Thank you @BarackObama for the beautiful flowers waiting for me in the office this morning. You’re my best friend, biggest fan, and getting notes and flowers from you will never get old. And to the many people from around the country who sent cards and posted on social media, you have no idea how much we love hearing from you. I know birthdays can sometimes be bittersweet (54!), but your messages of hope, generosity, and warmth have always reminded me how lucky and blessed we are.
