Monday marked a historic day in Chicago as the city inaugurated its first African American lesbian mayor, Lori Lightfoot. The 56-year-old Democrat, who is a former assistant US attorney, defeated Toni Preckwinkle in a runoff election last month. Lightfoot is now one of just 19 black women in US history to have led a city with a population of more than 100,000.

Thomas called Smith's gesture "a liberation gift."
Britain’s Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are growing up fast — and Kensington Palace has released adorable new photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge playing with their children, in a new garden co-designed by the Duchess. The "Back to Nature" garden, also designed by architects Andrée Davies and Adam White, will be unveiled at the Chelsea Flower Show in London, which starts on Tuesday. The space, which features swing sets, a treehouse and a river, is aimed at getting children to go outside and play, and is part of the Duchess’ work on children’s early development. And judging by the royal children’s muddy frolicking, it’s a hit. (📸: Matt Porteus/AP)

About 30 million light-years from Earth, two galaxies came together in an epic collision, and the beautiful fallout was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope ✨The impact created the blue stars and pink nebulas that can be seen on the right side of this image. Galaxy NGC 4485 and its larger galactic neighbor, NGC 4490, probably collided millions of years ago, but because it was so far away, we’re just seeing it now.(📸: ESA/Hubble/NASA)

A painting from Claude Monet’s “Haystacks” series set a record on Tuesday when it sold for $110.7 million 🎨The painting, which went to an anonymous bidder, is the most expensive impressionist artwork ever to be bought at auction, according to Sotheby’s in New York. The 1890 painting is regarded as the best of the artist’s "Les Meules" series, the auction house said. When India Jackson (left) was given the opportunity to work as an intern at @NASA, she wasn’t sure she could afford it. Jackson, who balances raising her preteen daughter (right) with working toward a PhD in solar physics at Georgia State University, thought the move to Houston would be too expensive. That’s when her cousin set up a GoFundMe campaign, and money flooded in. The campaign stopped taking donations after reaching its $8,000 goal in just one day. "This is amazing, an amazing opportunity, a lifetime dream," Jackson said. "I just didn't know how I would do it." (📸: India Jackson)

Grumpy Cat, arguably the internet's most popular cat and one of its first viral memes, has died at age 7. "Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome," Grumpy Cat's owner said. The cat's real name was Tardar Sauce and she had feline dwarfism. This, her owners said, probably accounted for her distinctive facial features and small size. Her fame may have started on Reddit, but she became such a cultural phenomenon that she inspired art projects, perfumes, merchandise, Skechers shoes, comics and even a "Grumppuccino" coffee. At the time of her death, #grumpycat had 1.5 million followers on Twitter, 2.4 million on Instagram and 8.5 million on Facebook. "Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world -- even when times were tough. Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere," her owners said.
