Happy Valentine’s Day! My very talented twin sister @bridgetbaking made these fruity marshmallow hearts for her friends this year. And being her twin means she doesn’t have a choice but to be friends with me! You should follow her to see the awesome cakes and other delicious treats she makes!
If you haven’t yet heard of the pork belly baklava from @nostimorestaurant where have you been?! I was invited to try it and many more of the menu items last month. It was all so delicious! @dtsirekas has created a fantastic menu bringing classic Greek flavours out of the tavernas and into modern dining. Pictured: - tarama dip & pita - pork belly baklava - haloumi filo - chicken souvlaki - zucchini & eggplant crisps
I can see why @andyrubyau were top of the leaderboard on @mykitchenrules with their Peruvian rice with duck main meal. It was delicious! Even with coriander in there which is usually a banned product in this household. The mix of flavours worked well. And we realised we need to cook duck more! You can find this recipe on the website (as well as others like their dessert which I want to make soon too!) It makes a LOT of rice and we used some leftovers to make chicken and rice enchiladas another night. #mkr @channel7queensland
It’s National Pizza Day! I wish I was eating more of the pizza from @bellabruttapizza again right now. The smell in this place is incredible and once you have ordered you won’t have to wait long for your pizza to be out of the oven and on the table. My recommendation: Get the clam pizza! Trust me.
We went to Sydney at the start of the new year and unfortunately at that time a few restaurants were still closed for the holidays. We had planned on having breakfast somewhere else that wasn’t open so this brunch at @themewsmosman was Plan B but sometimes those end up being just as good (I imagine because we never got to the first place but this place was good!) I ordered the open steak sandoitchi mostly because it was a fun name to say so luckily it was also tasty! The karaage chicken burger looked nice and crispy and the smashed avo with its purple cauliflower and pink whipped goats cheese was pretty and delicious!
It’s well into 2019 now and I need a holiday. Looking back on some of the best meals I had in 2018, this one at @yarri_restaurant last February was a stand out. They had a mixture of dishes with unique ingredients I’d never had before to some classic flavour pairings. I loved everything and ended up happy to have had such a great meal but sad that it was at a restaurant on the other side of the country. The cured emu with macadamia milk, beetroot, and muntries was new to me and incredible. The scallops with jamon and XO sauce were great. The prawns with miso butter were so delicious I nearly ate the head (nearly). Lemon butter with pipis are the perfect accompaniment with white fish. But, the dessert. Amazing! I couldn’t decide between two so ordered both. So glad I did. Apricot sorbet with yoghurt and macadamia looked like an egg and I loved it. The sriracha sorbet with mango and coconut was so incredible, I wish I could find unusual desserts like this more. They serve @snakeandherring wines and we had Bizarre Love Triangle which was so nice we drove 20 minutes in the opposite direction after lunch to visit the winery and ship some back home. I hope you all have a fantastic 2019 and eat lots of delicious food.
As much as I like to go out for dinner, I also love staying in with a cheese platter. So when I was offered to try Sunbites crackers recently, I immediately thought platter. They worked really well with cheese, particularly Persian feta. Although then my girlfriend and Mum ended up just eating the crackers by themselves. #SunbitesCollab
Trips to Byron Bay aren’t complete for me these days without a stop at @thefarmatbyronbay for a meal at @threeblueducks I’m never disappointed here and this last visit over the holidays was no exception. We had coal roasted octopus, kingfish ceviche, and chicken liver parfait to start then King Island pasture raised rib eye and and BBQ pork belly for mains with smashed cucumber salad on the side. All so good. My favourite was definitely the steak though, perfectly cooked and so juicy and flavourful. And when you add a pinch of their rosemary salt it becomes the kind of delicious I don’t even have words for. You might have to wait for a table in peak times but it’s worth it. Do what we did and grab some pastries from the bakery area to snack on before you get seated. Those are incredible too!
I hope everyone had or is still having a lovely holiday break! It’s not just the time for Christmas and New Year for me, it’s also my Mum’s birthday in December and my girlfriend’s birthday tomorrow. Lots of celebrations! For Mum’s birthday we went to Noosa and had a fantastic dinner at @yoyobarnoosa Everything was delicious. Stand outs for me were the duck and chicken liver parfait with blueberry jam, elderflower gel, and chicken skin as well as the suckling pig sausage roll with smoked green tomato ketchup. The dessert was one of the best I’ve had in a long time - cardamom panna cotta with textures of passionfruit and roasted white chocolate. So good!! I’m heading to Sydney tomorrow for a few days, let me know if there is anywhere I need to check out :)
Sometimes all you need on a Friday afternoon is a burger (and maybe a drink too!) This is a flashback to when I checked out @_hellcatmaggie with @beck_wade and @amandajeffs3 a few months back. The “Boss” burger was tasty, but you might end up needing to eat it with a knife and fork like we did! It’s pretty big. I tried to pick it up like a normal burger, but with so much brisket and potato on there, I got it alllll over my face. Their chicken karaage and corn on the cob were nice too, although I would have preferred the parmesan to be finely grated rather than shaved. Dessert was a bit of a miss though, the waffle was a little burnt which was hopefully just a once off. If you are down that end of town this is a good option for after work drinks and bites with friends.
It’s been almost two months since we went on our last little trip to Adelaide and that time I made sure to make a reservation at @africola_soundsystem First impressions from the restaurant were great, the decor is very unique and the service was fantastic! It was a birthday celebration for us and they poured us a glass each of sparkling to celebrate. Such a lovely touch. The menu has changed a bit since our visit, but my favourites are still there. Definitely get the smoked leek (first picture) it was incredible. And of course, their famous crispy chicken skin tea sandwiches. The wagyu rump cap was tender and delicious as well. Make sure to book your seat a few weeks in advance to avoid disappointment, this place is not to be missed in Adelaide!
I finally tried the food at my go-to morning coffee spot @frankie_andgeorge recently. I took the lead from my friend @beck_wade and had breakfast for lunch. She chose eggs benedict with bacon and I went for the almond french toast with custard, freeze dried cherries, and nut crumble. The toast was so tall, like two pieces put together with an almond filling. I love anything with good custard and this was no exception. I’m eager to return to try more from the menu and maybe a cocktail one Friday afternoon...
Looking back on the launch party for @atelierbrasserie I really enjoyed every little bite and I may have had five portions of the steak tartare... It’s a lovely venue perfect for date night or celebrations or just because! I really need to return and try more of their menu (particularly the steak frites, seriously go find photos of it - looks so good!)
When I’m in Italy, I try to eat gelato every day. But I’m not in Italy every day, so what then? @milanogelateria is owned by Franco and Camilla - a real Italian couple really from Italy. They make all their own gelato and have shops in Caloundra and Stones Corner. The classics are there of course, but Franco also likes to experiment with some more unusual flavours you won’t find anywhere else. So you can get chocolate along with something like ginger or turmeric and pepper. I tried them all and they were all great! I’d recommend pistachio if it’s available too. And coconut. It’s hard to choose! They have vegan options too so everyone can have a treat.
The cocktail menu at @the_boomboomroom is split into three sections and every drink is named after a song. These two are from the Uptempo section and are both Bruno Mars inspired - Uptown Funk and 24K Magic. They were both delicious but my favourite for both the drink and the song is definitely Uptown Funk. It’s located in an old bank basement underneath @_donnachang so if you want you could grab dinner afterwards... or just stay for another drink/song.
Walking into @_donnachang is an experience in itself. It has that old school glamour which makes you feel like you are really treating yourself as you take your seat. I visited with @the.long.adventure and @amandajeffs3 a few weeks ago as a farewell celebration from my last job (any excuse for a long lunch with friends!) We shared a lot of small plates and the stand out was the wagyu pepper puffs. I could have eaten a lot more of those! The prawn bao were my pick over the pork bao too, although they were both tasty. We also ordered crab and prawn crystal dumplings, scallops with black bean and chilli, and egg noodle chow mein with pork. The noodle dish was a bit too salty for our taste so we had to tone it down by mixing with some steamed rice. We finished with a couple of steamed passionfruit custard buns which were dusted with gold and very pretty! I’m eager to return to try some of the larger dishes!
@headrickslane was at the top of my list of restaurants to try when I visited Rockhampton last month and it did not disappoint! We had pork belly with scallops and black pudding and emu with beetroot to start - both were incredible. Then the mains of yellow tail kingfish, duck breast, and brisket continued the ‘everything here is delicious’ theme. Not to mention the cocktails were awesome! They have a really cool space with the brewery on one side and the more upmarket laneway on the other. If you’re in Rockhampton this is definitely a place not to miss. They do breakfast too but I didn’t get to try that on this visit.
