One from yesterday. And probably my favourite frame. Because how often can you say you walked behind a 65m tall waterfall? This shot had soooooo many of you talking on stories last night so I wanted to share a bit about how this was taken. . We had to hike up a set of muddy stairs, got drenched before we even got behind this fall, and then had to work our way around a lot of tourists who were walking back and forth. The entire walking path was also soaking wet and muddy, and extremely slippery (not conducive when carrying 15kg of gear 😅😅). Was it easy? Absolutely not. Was it worth it? Heck yes! . Thank you to my couple who have been 150% committed to getting the frame. We got drenched multiple times, dirtied by mud everywhere, drove hundreds and hundreds of km, frozen by insane gale force water sprays, surviving on probably 4 hours sleep, and still managed to laugh the entire way. . Day 2 begins now, so more on stories later! The rest of my travel snaps will be at my other account: @twothreadedpoppies . PS: to the follower who saw me in the field with all the Icelandic horses yesterday, I just wanted to give a massive shout out!! I couldn’t believe that of all places two Asian girls who have never met each other, ‘bump’ into each other it is across the globe in a completely foreign terrain on a road side in the middle of nowhere 😂😂😂.
Currently in Iceland. We woke up 4 hours earlier due to an incorrect calculation of timing of routes. The sky was still black. We all only had about 4-5 hours of sleep in the bag. But this was the best mistake ever. It meant we got to see the sun rise over this incredible country, and we had 4 extra hours up our sleeve to stop anywhere and anytime we wanted. This was one of our accidental finds. Worth it, and such a blessing in disguise. . Shot with a lens I only ever use for landscapes and never for portraits - the 24mm lens (the actual spot of land we were standing on was extremely small and tight and right next to a deep ditch of water. Plus a lot of horse dung 😂😂😂. Thank goodness for adventurous couples and iPhone jacks that allow on the go transfers of photos from my camera like this! . Also, fun fact. Icelandic horses are very peaceful creatures and friendly things. This one walked right up to us and happily allowed us to touch its mane ☺️ // Sharing more to IG stories soon :) // Remainder of the travel snaps (non wedding related iceland posts) will be up at my other account: @twothreadedpoppies ☺️
One from last weekend when I was in Melbourne and it was forecasted to thunderstorm with an over 90% chance of heavy rain. . Did the forecasts come true? Yup. . Did it change the outcome and quality of the photos? Absolutely not. . In fact, here’s one frame where the sun burst through the clouds for literally just 2 minutes or even less. In fact, I saw the break of light while group photos were happening after the ceremony and I remember asking the couple can we run for the light? They said yes. Bless their determination and trust. . For this was the result. Brief. But oh so incredibly worth it. . Thank you for the honor of inviting me into your lives for the day Cindy and Ken. It was so beautiful to witness your love for one another. You’re both so loved and I could see it in every embrace and tear that was shed by your loved ones surrounding you that day. . For those wanting to see more (lots of the story telling frames there!!) from their gorgeous day, head on to my stories! I’m gonna drop them there in a moment! :) . // Hair and Makeup by my fave in Melbourne: @missaimmey // Video by such a great team to work alongside: @ajr_films //#jennysunphotography #jennysun #kenxcindy
I still hate putting my face on this account these days (most of my personal shiz has moved to @twothreadedpoppies )... but a lot of you don’t realise it’s still a real person working here! So this photo is me trying to change that! . Anyway....I know most people have assistants to do this (see above frame ☝️), but the OCD in me actually likes doing this. So If you see me fixing your hair, adjusting your dress, re-pinning your button hole, or helping you refold your pocket square, it’s not because I like cleaning weeds off of things or shaking out the insects that have crawled up your gown, but it’s because I do care about your frames. And there are certain things that hours of photoshop can’t fix. Or can’t fix well enough. I’m not sure if this is a girl thing or just a me thing... haha! But hey... just a heads up for anyone who brings me to your shoot 😂😂 #jennysunphotography
AUTUMN | This season is just around the corner in Sydney! I can’t wait to see all the colours turn red again this year like I did with this session I photographed! I’m definitely a blossom/flower person through and through, but for just 2 weeks in the year, I don’t mind putting that preference aside for this kind of frame 😍😍😍 . What’s your preference? Comment with a flower if you love the blossom seasons 🌸🌸🌸. Or comment with a leaf of you love the fall colours! 🍁🍂🍁🍂 hard choice isn’t it! . // #jennysunphotography #jennysun
Proof that once again, that beautiful magical, and perfect light can be found in Malaysia. Did you know this spot was between two trees next to a cement footpath? And did you know that this same session rained and was overcast for more than half of the time? Sharing the rainy shots on my stories soon! 😉😉 . PS: for those who cannot travel, and are wanting a session in Malaysia, I’ll be around from June to August this year chasing for this kind of light with anyone who wants to join me! :) I’ll only be doing a few more due to my already booked schedule so drop me an email if you’ve been thinking about it and want a photographer who can work with rain hail or shine! :) #jennysunphotography
Posting my first photo here in two months. Yup. That’s like 60 days. Pretty much a lifetime here in the world of instagram 😂. Not because I’ve been un-busy. Quite the opposite. It got to April and I was suddenly like - HOW IN THE WORLD DID Q1 of this year just pass? I swear it was January like yesterday. LOL! Anyway, back to wedding photography. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, Cos you know - Instagram algorithm probably means like 90% of you never saw the first one or two times I talked about this: The industry and the noise it creates honestly exhausts me. The more I look around (which is why I don’t. The moment my eyes wander, I’ve told myself to just get off the app and it’s been a healthy practice for the last few years), the more frustrating chaos of opinions that fill the space, and the more I see of the competitiveness that goes on (all masked by super nice surface level hellos and handshakes - sorry, getting very very real here). My clients are WONDERFUL, so don’t get me wrong, but I have often felt terrified of the work peers (not all though, the super awesome ones I call friends I’m so sooooo grateful for), so I tend to shy away. The last 2 months has both been a mini sabbatical for me from social media (mainly my work account here. I post on my other one @twothreadedpoppies when I’m absent from this one), as well as a time to focus on life without the constant need to be on the phone for the sake of being seen. It’s exhausting and I’m not one for playing the game for the sake of numbers. JSP for me has always been a place for creating connection through imagery of love. And feelings. And genuine stories. And staying authentic through and through. I hope you get that through my squares here :) it’s something I continue to practice and the moment this space starts to feel like another channel of noise, sharing meaningless content, I’m out. So.... while this caption has nothing to do with today’s photo, that’s okay! I basically just wanted to say ‘hi’ again and talk a little - isn’t that was social media was all originally about anyway before we all tried selling things through it? :) Happy Thursday!
There’s no pattern to where I’ll put my couples on their wedding day. I’ll use locations anywhere and everywhere there’s good light. Can you believe these were toilet stalls?? No, really. They’re legit working toilet stalls where people did their business I kid you not!! And my bride, ON her wedding day seriously listened to me when I said she would need to stand in a toilet to pose for me before she could walk into her dinner reception. And so she did!! 😂😂😂😁😁😁 How did I find it? I had to pee before starting the portrait session of their wedding day. Haha! Never underestimate accidental finds ANYWHERE. This one was narrow but well worth it! 😂// #jennysun #jennysunphotography
When the sun has gone past the horizon, there’s this thing that happens called dusk magic. Most people don’t realise how beautiful this light is. It’s so soft. So creamy. Full of pinks, purples, and blues, and warm tones. A lot of the newer to the game photographers will only chase after golden hour. But the one with a few more years in their pocket will search further. It only lasts a few minutes. But they will know how to see it, love it and use it 😍 // #jennysun #jennysunphotography
Shared this frame on IG stories late last night and didn’t realise how many of you would engage with it!! You wouldn’t believe this was in the middle of Melbourne’s CBD unless I told you. Right?? In all honesty, this was a lucky find. Our original plan was to photograph some iconic buildings that my couple wanted, but while waiting for them I found this random oasis of yellow flowers and golden sunset light in the middle of traffic lights and city towers surrounding all sides of us. So in the end, we got the iconic buildings, but we also got these sun drenched frames too. And I’m so glad we did. I am incredible grateful for random finds that end up being better than anything we ever originally intended ❤️❤️❤️ //PS: after almost 3 weeks of laryngitis and other flu related issues, I’m finally on the home stretch of being well. I’ve been extremely thankful for this month of downtime to rest and slow down. It’s been a year since my last break. So God only knows I needed it. More than I knew I needed it myself. Can’t wait to be back soon everyone! Thank you for sticking around :) // #jennysun #jennysunphotography
One from yesterday. 🎊🎉 . My last wedding of 2018. Thank you C + J for taking the chance on this Aussie Malaysian girl and flying her into your home and your lives in your beautiful city of Penang, to solidify in pictures what you wanted to celebrate between you and your loved ones!! I can’t wait to show you more! . #jimchloenuptials
Middle of summer is often one of the hardest seasons to shoot in down here in Australia. It’s no joke. You don’t want to be stuck in it without any experience to handle the beast that it is. The sunsets are BEAUTIFUL, so don’t get me wrong, but they normally happen around 8-9pm when everyone is right in the middle of dinner and reception proceedings. Even yesterday, even though it was a lunch celebration, portraits started at 3pm = middle of the day light. So grateful for these two yesterday who extended their time with me so they could stay out long enough with me to catch the good light. I know not everyone does this (and that’s fine ☺️), due to time or other constraints, so when it does happen, I love the canvas that’s given to create frames that are worthy of the investment couples have made for their memories to happen within these squares. I actually told these two - um, we are on a cliff edge, the wind is blowing at what feels like a small hurricane speed, it’s too dangerous, I don’t recommending going out there. But E replied instantly - let’s do it! And so we did. Thank you SOOOOO much for your commitment and your trust!! This was probably one of the second last frames we got, and I am soooo happy we stayed for this light and worked with the wind and all. Congratulations S+E. Your joy and gentle spirits were such a blessing to be around. You are surrounded by such incredible family and friends, and I could see so much love showered upon you both yesterday. Just a testament to your character and hearts. Thank you for letting me share in the same joy I saw flow through all those hands, hearts, and souls that embraced you two as you toasted to your new lives together! ❤️❤️ // #jennysun #jennysunphotography
To these two....I love that you cared enough about your photos to listen to our advice from start to end with complete trust, and without any questions asked. It’s a rare gift to me as your wedding photographer. We never do this to be difficult. We do this because I only ever want the best for my couples. The best!!! My goal is the same as yours - amazing photos. So thank you!!! From scheduling enough time for us for every single section of your day, to changing locations for your portraits so that you wouldn’t be caught under the blazing burning sun in the middle of the day, and even shifting the timeline of your dinner reception on the day itself so that you could sneak away from your guests for that little slice of time to catch the very best of sunset hour. This frame is just one square of proof from the many we got, as a result of your trust and investment in us as your photographers. And while most people will assume this was hard work or annoying, you guys are proof we had a blast doing it the entire time. Know that you got the very best from us because of it. ❤️❤️❤️ // #jennysun #jennysunphotography
Yesterday was a stark reminder of the best parts of my job. Despite the almost 14 hour day (continuous mind you... not like the weddings in Malaysia which are split into two and a large 5 hour break in between), I felt nothing but gratitude and joy leaving the wedding as the dance floor broke out in a euphoria of energy. You see, what most people don’t know, is that I actually consistently pray to have the sheer blessing to meet and cross paths, and work for couples like yesterday. For real! When they walk into my life, I don’t ever take it for granted. I truly believe they are God sent. You know, people who are kind, genuine, giant hearted, humble, considerate, full of joy, full of fun, and with incredibly deep deep pockets in their souls to love those around them. I could see it in the way they loved on their nearest and dearest. And I could hear it in the words exchanged with tears as their families spoke grains of wisdom into their start at married life and this journey I document as a wedding photographer, that I like to call love. They both admit they are not perfect at it, and were honest about the fact that their characters together cause tension and conflict, but they also embraced the differences knowing they challenge and sharpen each other, and only make each other better because of it. I love that you want to be better and not just ‘happy’. Although I wish you a lifetime of both :) And mostly, I love that your wedding ceremony was a celebration and a reminder of how Jesus loves, and how you want to model that in your walk together - to sacrificially love the other, putting the other above yourself even if it costs you. Something I want to do better at. Thank you F+E for sharing your lives with me for the day. I’m grateful that our big big God let us cross paths. The honor was all mine and I can only be so lucky to have been the one able to tell your story in the images we walked away with that day. You two have left an indelible mark on this realist with an old romantic heart. ❤️❤️❤️ // PS: will be sharing more sneak peeks over on IG stories later today! You know what to do 👀😉 #jennysunphotography #jennysun
