Sunday Funday: Once in a while we feel the urge to clense and release things, feelings, people, etc that no longer serves us anymore. I did some techniques from Mary Kondo today. Taking everything out of my drawers and tossing out and keeping what still serves me. Even cutting shirts up to my liking because i dont wear them the way the were made. Feeling guilt to cut them even though ive wanted to for months due to guilt of how expensive it was, but thd words or meaning of it meant too much to donate. Choosing what i actually wear opposed to the items that have not been touched in months. You forget what you had buried under there. There is a since of guilt tossing things out as i spent hard working money but wore maybe once. How reckless i csn sometimes be with where i choose me hard work to go towards. Taking the time to fold and roll each item so i could see what i invested in made me think about the people who designed and put this item into fruition. It reminded me of memories of where i bought them if it was to commemorate an event or vacation. The state of your room is the state of your mind. I often see that our minds are clouded. We dont see how much we do have, while people with less admire how much more we have and waste. They would happily switch places with us, while we still seek happiness elsewhere always wanting more. Nothing is ever good enough, translates into im not good enough. If you dont recognize it, you will get stuck in this cycle no matter how rich you are. A poor man with much less can be richer than most. Appreciate what you have now. There is no waiting until you have an end result of a wish to be happy. Your process in life should make you happy and fullfilled each day. It is slow with ups and downs. The process is beautiful once you look back on how you got here.❤ when your in the moment it seems slow. Breathing and Meditation vs. Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and Eczema I spent a good part of my childhood being somewhat of a nursing aide to my sister. Her sickle cell impacted her health and overall functionality in ways I’ll never comprehend. Fast forward 20 odd years and I’m revisiting my childhood through my daughter. Hafsah is by far the strongest, bravest, most loving, most considerate, most compassionate, and most courageous 5 year old girl I know. In addition to a plethora of allergies that drastically impact her diet, I never seem to get a break wif her eczema. She scratches her skin raw. She bleeds in the night. She has trouble sleeping. She becomes short of breath. She panics. She shuts down. She doubts herself. Yet through it all....she rises and she trusts me. She smiles. She plays. She runs. She jumps. She SWIMS. She BREATHES. She HEALS. She TEACHES ME!. She teaches me patience, courage, humility, resilience... She teaches me how to listen. I love her. She’s 5. She’s not ok. BUT...... Many people think I use actual plants for my mugs instead of the handmade stencils I actually use but with these I decided to finally try actual plants. Especially for more intricate plants like the sweet cicely (top mug) which would be difficult to make into stencils, I like using the real deal. I had to alter my technique somewhat to make it work and it’s a bit more finicky than stencils, but I’m enjoy the results. The bottom mug is wild strawberry. I put some wild strawberry in my garden last year and it’s thriving under the big fir tree out back. While working on these mugs, I was reminded of Robin Wall-Kimmerer’s passage on wild strawberries and the gift economy in her book Braiding Sweetgrass. I’ve linked the full passage in my stories but here’s a little bit: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “In Potawatomi, the strawberry is ode min, the heart berry. We recognize them as the leaders of the berries, the first to bear fruit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Strawberries first shaped my view of a world full of gifts simply scattered at your feet. I actually didn’t know a whole lot about Tom T. Hall beyond a couple of songs before this project. I came across a really great podcast called Cocaine & Rhinestones by @tylermahancoe that has a pretty informative episode about him. The podcast doesn’t just to tell how he got his nick name “the Storyteller” through his great songwriting, but also explains how successful he was at writing songs for others such as Johnny Cash, Loretta Lyn, George Jones, Bobby Bare, and Waylon Jennings to name a few. This episode is the third part to the success story of Hall’s song “Harper Valley PTA”, popularized by Jeannie C. Riley’s 1968 recording. Definitely worth checking out the podcast for the full story! They’re not the prettiest but they mean something to me and to the bugs that make the most of their hosts. . I’m highly competitive by nature but I acknowledge that my garden is not at all the best in the neighborhood. Few random things are growing. Other spots are empty. Sometimes weeds just take over. The lime tree planted 3 years ago is still less than 1’ tall. And one time, just when I wasn’t going to bother anymore, a neighbor (who doesn’t have a garden) passed by and planted some rice plant when I wasn’t here. That encouraged me to keep going. . Today’s nugget therefore centers on the need to keep going even if you consider yourself to be the back of the pack. Truth is, my garden may look a little “popdown” (Bajan dialect required) but there are several other houses around who don’t have a garden whose occupants pass by and see my efforts for what they are, progress. You never know the faces of those you inspire. . Swipe left. The final pic shows the rice plant the neighbor brought over some time last year. It’s one of the few things that survived the drought.
