You're reading this so I want you to do something for me; text a person who means a lot to you and tell them what you love most about them. That's all I'll say for today.
I loved capturing this image with Brenden and Dean on their awesome forest couples session! Canberra has so many incredible nooks and crannies (does anyone else say that?!) hidden away, and the Namadgi is my favourite place to explore for these magical moments! Nature is just FULL of amazing textures like these rocks, and it's even better when spending it with awesome people like Brenden and Dean.
Isn't it amazing how quickly time can fly when you're having fun? I can't believe it's been two weeks since one of my best mates left to go back to the UK! There's nothing like taking someone who has never been to Australia on a little tour around the wonders and magic that this beautiful country has to offer. This image here of Will and I on his last day was captured at Wooloomooloo just outside of Sydney. If you haven't been there, for the love of everything, GO. It is a stunning little walk and you get to see all kinds of magic things, including wales! Do you have any favourite sightseeing spots you'd like to share?
Who doesn't love those shots of us getting ready for the big day! It's that little peak into the start of the day and those hours before everything kicks off.
So you may be thinking "wow, this James guy is meant to be a wedding and portrait photographer but all he does is post crazy photos of nature and every so often there's a shot of a couple?". Good question! I believe in storytelling. That means your story and mine, and I love to share what inspires me to capture the way I do. I believe that being personal to the people I work with is such a key part of how I can capture you and your family at your essence. This means you get to see all of the weird things I love, and (hopefully) I get to learn a little bit about you! This image right here inspires me and sums up what I'm all about. We found this incredible shoe pot in the beautiful town of Mogo on the Australian Coast, and how apt is this?! Exploring nature in one image. So tell me something weird about yourself which you think puts you apart?
We're both in this together. Capturing that awesome celebration of two people becoming engaged is one of my favourite things on portrait sessions. From gorgeous ring shots to hearing those funny moments between you two, there's nothing like it! Especially when surrounded by some of the most gorgeous landscapes in and around Canberra! This cute little engagement session with Ashleigh and Ben back a couple of months ago was a dream! Have you recently become engaged? Let me know below and let's celebrate!
AirBNBs really are amazing. Being able to stay in someone’s gorgeous home with all of their nicknacks and little decorations always inspires me somehow. A few weeks ago whilst seeing my friend Will, I shacked up in this incredible roof top apartment right next to Flinders Street in Melbourne and was greeted with a whole rooftop of fauna and flora! Such an amazing surprise! Have you got any favourite places you’ve stayed at with AirBNB?
Now HERE is a cracker of a sunset! Kelly, Dave, Tilly and Henry's sunset family session was something really magical. From finding bugs in the bark of a tree, to finding roos in the sunlight, this session had it all. This little tribe is full of such wonderful people, and it's so amazing having children on a portrait session because of the awesome energy they bring! A lot of families usually tell me they worry about how their children will behave in front of the camera but every single time I just say 'let them go nuts'. The images turn out WAY better that way! Do you have a favourite place to enjoy sunset?
Isn't it amazing what you can find in and around Canberra by just driving an hour, if that, into the bush? This little session Kaitlyn and I did a few weeks ago really was an amazing example of what I love most about Bridal style sessions; getting out and celebrating nature! Do you have a favourite place out in nature that means the most to you? . Model: @fkn_strawberry Hair & Makeup: @christineb.makeup and @axis_hairdressing Flowers: @mrsmoxom
One of my favourite days apart from scouting Wednesdays (my chance in the week to get out and explore somewhere new and amazing!) is DELIVERY DAY! Seriously, seeing your life and story in tangible art pieces is one of the most unreal and incredible things ever! If you've ever been to the studio you'll know exactly what I mean, with our whole house being covered in pieces like these! These gorgeous fine art prints are for Kelly and Dave's amazing family session, and I can't wait to share even more of these with you all very soon! How has hump day been for you?
I feel bad sometimes that I don't remember as much as I do from my years doing biology and studying nature. I'd love to know what these little plants all worn were! Found in the cute little village of Mogo after having the most awesome ice cream in a small fudge shop. I think I like the textures and colour in this shot the most which is why I want to share it!
Moments like this are some of the most important in our lives; that moment where we finally get to see our loved ones make the biggest leaps in life and to go and embrace what they love. Seeing Sarah and her father moments before the big ceremony was unreal. I can't wait to share more from this magical day!
When I visited Sydney last week, I came across a whole TONNE of Birds Of Paradise when travelling around Luna Park. These beautiful and colourful little plants are so unique that they look almost alien! It reminds me of Stuart and Alisa's Wedding last September, where funnily enough Stuart had this as his flower, and Alisa had another one of my favourite plants, the Sunflower. Do you have a favourite plant that grows like wild near where you live?
One thing I do every week is to get out to a new location I've never been to. Scouting is such a big part of what I do and how I can recommend such awesome places to my clients! You've heard me bang on about how many incredible places Australia has, and there's never a dull moment when just going for an explore! Especially with an awesome beer when getting to the summit. Mine's a local pale ale! This was also captured by my best mate Will, who you've heard a little bit about now! It's such a treat for me to have photos taken of myself, and even more of a treat to spend the last day with my best mate whilst he was in Australia, climbing to the top for this amazing sunset near Sydney!
Drone photography is the perfect way to bring just a little bit more story to your day, and to get those awe-inspiring landscape shots! One of my favourite places to take the drone out for a walk is down by the coast, on a gorgeous overcast day like this one was! Do you have a favourite spot that you love to get out to and have some alone time?
It was roughly one week ago that I captured this image of my best mate Will down near Mogo on the South-East Coast of Australia. It's amazing how quickly time can fly by, and the whole week he was here just whizzed by. The last few days I've been really reflecting on how lucky I am to call Australia home, and how fortune we are to be able to drive just two/three hours and get to the snow, or the beach, or even to Sydney. It's remarkable. I'll tell you what I love about this image. I love that it mixes the textures of the sand and the ocean together, and right in the middle Will is just looking down at one of the rock pools. It's simple and amazing. Man, do I sound a bit up myself saying this about my own work?!
If you didn't know, I'm a HUGE bird nerd. Like MASSIVE. Not to toot my own horn too much but I have a degree in Biology, specialising in zoology, and a Masters in Conversation and Wildlife Management, specialising in Ornithology. This means that when it comes to a nature adventure you'll likely be treated to me nerding out about a particular bird's call. One of the big pulls for me coming to Australia apart from the people, sunshine, and culture, was the fact that you could walk outside and find flocks of Rainbow Lorikeets, Sulfur Crested Cockatoos, and Lyre Birds! I love birds because their diversity is absolutely astounding. From their mannerisms and courtship displays to their calls. It's all such magic! Did you know that there are around 828 species of bird in Australia? Do you have a favourite bird? Or are you terrified of them?
One thing I love exploring with creating images is the use of textures. Nature is brimming with a whole variety of different shapes, patterns, colours. From mossy rocks to cluttered treetops, it's amazing what you can find when exploring the most random of locations. I love this image from Kaitlyn's bridal style session, and the contrast of reds against greens, against the slate colour of the rocks. This is the perfect example of what I look for when I try to find the perfect locations in nature. What textures are you drawn to? I'd love to hear! .
